  4.                   FOCUS ON CRIME PREVENTION:
  5.            BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT WORKING TOGETHER

  8.      A joint crime prevention program has been initiated between
  9. the Creve Coeur, Missouri, Police Department and the corporate
  10. security department of Monsanto, Inc., which has its world
  11. headquarters in Creve Coeur.  This new concept may lead to
  12. changes nationwide in the field of crime prevention in the years
  13. to come.
  14.  
  15.      This program is geared to make homes and the workplace 
  16. safer.  It was established to promote crime prevention techniques 
  17. and citizen awareness by sponsoring business watch, personal 
  18. safety programs, Operation ID, and shoplifting and bicycle safety 
  19. programs.  Initially, Monsanto donated money for the development 
  20. of a crime prevention logo bearing the words ``Business and 
  21. Government Working Together.''  Then, the corporation became 
  22. involved in crime prevention projects by providing personnel from 
  23. the corporate security department to work with police officers. 
  24. Twenty-two thousand area residents and Monsanto employees were 
  25. initially targeted by this joint program.

  27.      As part of the program, Monsanto security officers are 
  28. available to make home burglary prevention checks for the nearly 
  29. 6,000 local Monsanto employees.  These security officers, who 
  30. receive special training from police officers, visit homes of  
  31. Monsanto employees to point out security weaknesses and to  
  32. offer suggestions to improve them.  Creve Coeur police officers 
  33. conduct similar security checks for residents of the city.  Both 
  34. police and security officers involved in this joint program are 
  35. selected by their respective agencies.  All candidates must 
  36. undergo extensive evaluation in public speaking, writing skills, 
  37. appearance and education.

  39.      An informational crime prevention booth is also operated 
  40. during the city's annual Creve Coeur Days celebration held each 
  41. May.  This booth is staffed by police officers and Monsanto 
  42. security officers.  At the booth, parents and their children have 
  43. an opportunity to see crime prevention displays, obtain handouts 
  44. and make arrangements for programs in their neighborhoods and 
  45. businesses.  Monsanto also makes their world headquarters 
  46. facilities available for large groups interested in crime 
  47. prevention.

  49.      ``So much of police work is reacting to crimes already 
  50. committed,'' said a Creve Coeur officer.  ``This joint effort is 
  51. an exciting opportunity to fight crime before it occurs.''  If 
  52. results during the early stages of the program are any 
  53. indication, the difference is not only being felt in this 
  54. community but has also given new meaning to the phrase, 
  55. ``Business and Government Working Together.''
